 Environment, sustainability & social responsibility

Hotel Bethel is a nonprofit organization.
At Hotel Bethel, we recognize that the hospitality industry has a responsibility to contribute positively to society.
That’s why it has been important for us to implement various initiatives in the hotel’s daily operations to ensure that we act responsibly and continue to evolve. We have focused on reducing our environmental footprint, promoting social equity, and placing greater emphasis on sustainable choices.
Our inspiration comes from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted by the UN and aim to guide the world toward a more sustainable future for both people and the planet by 2030.
This report highlights our focus and the current status of our sustainability efforts, based on selected SDGs and key performance indicators.

 The UN Sustainable Development Goals

We have chosen to focus on the following Sustainable Development Goals, which align with our values and business foundation. In the following pages of this report, we will elaborate on how Hotel Bethel works with the selected goals.

E – Climate and Environment
S – Social
G – Governance: Responsible Leadership

Health and Wellbeing

We must ensure a healthy life for everyone and promote well-being for all age groups

Rent Water and Sanitation

We must ensure sustainable access to and management of water and sanitation for all

Decent Jobs and Economic Growth

We should promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all

Responsible Consumption and Production

We need to ensure sustainable consumption and production

 Good Health and Well-being

This goal focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all age groups. One of its targets includes achieving universal health coverage for all, including protection from financial risk and access to quality essential healthcare services.

At Hotel Bethel, we have ensured that a large proportion of our employees are covered by a comprehensive health insurance plan through their pension scheme, which also extends to parts of their families.
We have chosen to prioritize access to health insurance for our staff because we believe everyone should have the best possible opportunity to receive timely and high-quality healthcare.
Workplace safety is also of great importance to us. We are proud that the most recent report from the Danish Working Environment Authority came back with no remarks. It is essential to us that our employees feel safe at work and that all regulations are properly followed.

Clean water & Sanitation

One of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals focuses on improving water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensuring sustainable freshwater withdrawal and supply. The aim is to address water scarcity and significantly reduce the number of people suffering from water shortages.

As part of a complete renovation of the hotel, we prioritized the installation of a climate-friendly, water-saving tank to reduce water consumption within our sector and help protect the environment from unnecessary water use.
We have also installed a limescale filter that purifies all incoming water. This was done with the intention of extending the lifespan of our fixtures, such as taps and toilets.

 Decent Work and Economic Growth

One of the targets of SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth – is to achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men by 2030, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and to ensure equal pay for work of equal value. At Hotel Bethel, we place great importance on providing good working conditions.

At Hotel Bethel, our staff represents a variety of ethnic backgrounds, genders, ages, sexual orientations, and educational experiences. We value diversity, inclusion, and creating space for individual differences in the workplace. We are deeply committed to ensuring that everyone is treated equally and that a healthy work environment is maintained regardless of role or background. We provide equal pay for men and women and offer continuous opportunities for professional development and upskilling.

Ethnic distribution among staff:
Danish: 51%
Other ethnic backgrounds: 49%

Hotel Bethel strives to tailor employment positions to the individual needs of our staff, aiming to accommodate their preferences regarding working hours and job responsibilities as best as possible.

We also continuously launch initiatives that give employees the opportunity to strengthen their sense of community across departments—an effort we find significantly contributes to overall well-being in the workplace.

Responsible Consumption and Production

By 2030, the global goal is to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels. There is also a target to achieve environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste throughout their entire life cycle, significantly reducing their release to air, water, and soil in order to minimize adverse impacts on human health and the environment. Waste generation should be substantially reduced through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.

At Hotel Bethel, we strive for sustainable consumption. Therefore, we practice waste sorting and have established waste stations throughout the hotel where both employees and guests can properly separate their waste.

We prioritize environmentally responsible purchasing and place great emphasis on limiting and reducing food waste in our daily operations. A significant portion of the food served in our breakfast restaurant is organic, and we purchase eco-labeled cleaning products certified by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

We have also chosen to source all our pillows and duvets from an environmentally friendly company that is committed to continually improving its sustainability efforts. All our bedding is made from Better Cotton rather than conventional cotton, which reduces water use, synthetic pesticides, and fertilizers.

Our linen service is certified by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, ensuring water, energy, and detergent consumption is below the ecolabel’s strict standards. This company was one of the first ten in Denmark to be CSR-verified.

In guest rooms, you will find cups made from recycled plastic, and all rooms are equipped with energy-saving light bulbs to improve our energy consumption.

To activate the electricity in the rooms, guests must insert their key card into a holder by the door. This system ensures no unnecessary electricity is used when rooms are unoccupied.

Corridors are equipped with motion sensors so that lighting only intensifies when guests move through the hallways. These initiatives have been implemented to further improve the hotel’s energy efficiency.

Responsible Leadership

The board members of Hotel Bethel are selected based on personality and competencies, but also with the intention of fostering diversity within the leadership team. The board aims to achieve both age diversity and gender diversity among its members.

The executive management helps create a workplace where gender equality is a priority. It is an environment where male and female leaders share responsibility and contribute equally to daily operations with their respective skills.

Hvordan kan vores gæster hjælpe?

As a guest, you can actively help us reduce our water and energy consumption by only placing your towels on the floor if you wish to have them replaced.

You also have the option to decline housekeeping service between stays.  Simply inform the receptionist or hang the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on the door handle. The sign is available in all rooms.

Please help us sort waste by using the various recycling stations located throughout the hotel. You can also hand in electronic waste at the reception, and they will ensure it is properly disposed of.

A message from the Management

We strive to continue making sustainable choices in the daily operation of the hotel. We hope you will join us on this journey as we continuously seek new solutions that contribute positively to the environment, social equality, and sustainable development in society.
